If the hunger is not satisfied, the physical is destroyed. A physical body that wants to be independent fights against its own nature. Therefore, one can only speak of a spiritless nature if one wants to see it as a departure from its own nature. If one reflects on the fact that a physical nature can only be a longing for the spirit, then one goal of knowledge of nature arises: either-or. Either he must ask of nature: has it fallen away from its own nature? And what will become of it through this apostasy? Or he must ask, what is in it that even its apparent lack of spirit ultimately makes appear as a longing for the spirit? But this allows all questions about nature to converge into one: is the lack of spirit in inanimate nature not the revelation of a hidden hunger for the spirit?","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Psychological Aphorisms","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":161,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/36/18_psychological_aphorisms/p005","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:structural_identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":null,"publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Articles/GA036/English/SOL2024/18_Psychological_Aphorisms.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
