The first is something that is highly unpopular today. People say: How can you expect others to agree with something that only lives inside a person? How can we believe that something is true if we only recognize it within ourselves? — Precisely the opposite is true. The majority decides nothing when it comes to real truth. If you have learned a mathematical theorem, understood it, and become inwardly convinced of its truth, then two things apply to you: First, if a million people contradict you and disagree with you, it does not shake you at all. That is one thing. The second is that you are clear that anyone who creates the same conditions within themselves as you do in order to recognize, must agree with you, even though you have found the truth within. Just as it is true that the majority decides nothing about mathematical truths, so it is true that — if the conditions are correctly established, and this can be taught to everyone — the multitude can decide nothing about the results of secret science. We can find it within ourselves, and nothing external can dissuade us once we have recognized it within ourselves. In ancient times, the followers of secret science, who called themselves Gnostics, called this secret science Mathesis; not to say that it was mathematics, but because this secret science has the character of mathematical truths. But it has been a long time since the character of secret science was seen in this purity. It is regrettable that much has found its way into it that clouds the view, so that those who stand on the standpoint of science are horrified when they encounter something like secret science.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"The Mission of Esoteric Science in Our Time","site_heading":null,"date":"1907-10-10","location":null,"word_count":300,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/56/1907-10-10/p017","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"eLib2015","book_title":"Knowledge of Soul and Spirit","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA056/English/eLib2015/19071010p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line"},"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["English"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/56/1907-10-10/p017"},{"lang":"en","edition":"English","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/56/1907-10-10/p017","paragraph_aligned":true}],"record":{"record_type":"unknown","scope":"volume","note":"How this text was taken down (shorthand transcript, listeners' notes or manuscript) is not on record here.
