Basically, secret science only puts into practice and makes real what natural science has also suspected. When, for example, a natural scientist such as Karl von Baer, to whom Ernst Haeckel dedicated his work “Goals and Paths of Modern Evolutionary History,” says: It is a thought that pervades the whole world, that orders the planets, that has brought living beings forth from matter, that appears in its letters and in its meaning in the manifold forms of life, and that is, in essence, life itself — then one may well add: And if this thought, which can only be found in the supersensible world, is cherished and nurtured, if it consciously finds its way into human nature, then it will make people healthy, strong, and capable. Will it not then first dispel doubts, calm minds, lift hearts, and make human nature healthy? That is a deeper mission of secret science in our time. A science that remains on the surface of the sensual is to blame for the fact that human beings are hollowed out inside and that the age of materialism is also the age of nervousness and lack of concentration. These conditions would worsen if those who cling only to the external remained in the ascendancy.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"The Mission of Esoteric Science in Our Time","site_heading":null,"date":"1907-10-10","location":null,"word_count":260,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/56/1907-10-10/p035","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"eLib2015","book_title":"Knowledge of Soul and Spirit","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA056/English/eLib2015/19071010p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line"},"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["English"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/56/1907-10-10/p035"},{"lang":"en","edition":"English","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/56/1907-10-10/p035","paragraph_aligned":true}],"record":{"record_type":"unknown","scope":"volume","note":"How this text was taken down (shorthand transcript, listeners' notes or manuscript) is not on record here.
