The initiate is the one who knows a certain secret that is of the utmost importance for human life. It is a secret because if it were spoken aloud in everyday life, it would seem foolish, crazy, absurd, paradoxical. Well, that would be the least of it. But there are other reasons why the one who could speak the secret is not allowed to do so. The reason is so profound that this secret, which forms the conclusion of certain stages of initiation, could not be wrested from anyone, absolutely anyone, who knows it, even if they were tortured. This is a secret that can never be wrested from them. For this secret is not passed from person to person by being communicated in words; rather, the essential thing is to bring the student to the point where, through the indicated development of his own abilities and powers, he comes to solve the riddle behind the matter from within himself, so that, as it were, the student stands before the teacher with that shining eye that announces: I have found it!","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Initiation or Consecration","site_heading":null,"date":"1907-11-28","location":null,"word_count":203,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/56/1907-11-28/p018","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"eLib2015","book_title":"Knowledge of Soul and Spirit","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA056/English/eLib2015/19071128p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line"},"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["English"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/56/1907-11-28/p018"},{"lang":"en","edition":"English","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/56/1907-11-28/p018","paragraph_aligned":true}],"record":{"record_type":"unknown","scope":"volume","note":"How this text was taken down (shorthand transcript, listeners' notes or manuscript) is not on record here.
