Spiritual Science must replace this with the laws of spiritual relationships. Even if not always theoretically, the approach that is taken is based, more or less unconsciously, on the idea that the human organism consists more or less only of the physical body and the chemical substances in their interaction with each other. These substances are traced back to their chemical elements, and once their effects have been identified, an attempt is made to imagine how they might continue to act chemically in the great retort that is the human being. It is not to be claimed that many have not already gone beyond the view that the human being is merely a large retort. It is not theories that matter, but habits of thought. For the true practitioner, it is not what one thinks that matters, but what effects one's thoughts have. That is what matters. Whether one is an idealist or not is not important, but what is important for life is whether one has fruitful thoughts that enable life to flourish and progress. It is important to note that spiritual science, even in this regard, has nothing to do with dogma or any kind of belief. No matter how much someone may advocate the most spiritual theories, what matters is not that, but whether these thoughts are fruitful when put into practice. So if someone says they are not a materialist, that they believe in the life force, even in a spirit, but always approaches the question of nutrition as if human beings were large retorts, then their worldview cannot be fruitful. Spiritual Science only has something to say about these concrete questions if it is able to shine light into the individual, and it can do this both in relation to nutrition and in relation to health issues.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Questions Regarding Nutrition in the Light of Spiritual Science","site_heading":null,"date":"1908-12-17","location":null,"word_count":324,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/57/1908-12-17/p009","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"eLib2014","book_title":"Where and How Does One Find the Spirit?","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA057/English/eLib2014/19081217p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line"},"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["English"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/57/1908-12-17/p009"},{"lang":"en","edition":"English","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/57/1908-12-17/p009","paragraph_aligned":true}],"record":{"record_type":"unknown","scope":"volume","note":"How this text was taken down (shorthand transcript, listeners' notes or manuscript) is not on record here.
