Instead, they develop something else all the more. Nowadays, we see resignation in relation to the inner self, to the intellect, to inner powers, and to everything related to inner powers, spreading rapidly everywhere. People immediately resign themselves to their inner soul nature and say: Yes, if you don't like it, it's your fault, it's because you're not paying enough attention. — Devotion to the inner self is most prevalent today among those who are most indignant about their external fate. How complacent human beings are, when it comes down to it. And they are particularly complacent when they emphasize again and again that nothing needs to be developed other than what is already within them today. Today's doctrine of individuality is the purest doctrine of devotion. The idea that individuality must be elevated and that no opportunity to do so should be left unused is something that greatly conflicts with the feelings of devotion of today's active people.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Self-education in the Light of Spiritual Science","site_heading":null,"date":"1912-03-14","location":null,"word_count":171,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/61/1912-03-14/p028","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"eLib2016","book_title":"Human History in the Light of Spiritual Investigation","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA061/English/eLib2016/19120314p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line"},"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["English"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/61/1912-03-14/p028"},{"lang":"en","edition":"English","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/61/1912-03-14/p028","paragraph_aligned":true}],"record":{"record_type":"unknown","scope":"volume","note":"How this text was taken down (shorthand transcript, listeners' notes or manuscript) is not on record here.
