If we look in detail at what has been attempted in recent times with regard to the study of the soul, we immediately get the impression that minds that have been trained by the scientific way of thinking often pass by the points where the knowledge of the soul, the knowledge of the most important questions of existence, should open up. As an example today, I will mention the ideas of a thinker of recent times, whom I have often referred to here and who can indeed be considered one of those who have endeavored to go beyond the merely external, sensual existence and point to something that lives in the spiritual behind the sensual. I would like to start with certain thoughts that Eduard von Hartmann, the philosopher of the unconscious, wrote down at the beginning of his psychology, his theory of the soul. He expresses how it is actually impossible to observe the phenomena of the soul, and how the difficulty of a psychology lies precisely in the fact that it is almost impossible to observe the phenomena of the soul. Ich möchte ausgehen von gewissen Gedanken, die Eduard von Hartmann, der Philosoph des Unbewußten, niedergeschrieben hat im Beginn seiner Psychologie, seiner Seelenlehre. Er spricht da aus, wie es eigentlich unmöglich sei, die Seelenerscheinungen zu beobachten, und wie die Schwierigkeit einer Seelenkunde gerade darin liege, daß es schier unmöglich sei, die Seelenerscheinungen zu beobachten.
