The I, which we regard as the divine spark, is the last to awaken in the human being as we see him today. There was once a human being in whom the I had not yet fully awakened. If we want to look for such a person in whom the I was still dormant, we would find such a person in the early days of ancient Greece. It was only with the appearance of the first philosophers that the I awoke, but Greek religion emerged from a time when man was not yet aware of his self, from a world view that was essentially tied to the astral body, and therefore we see the gods of Greece endowed with drives, passions and desires, with perceptions and sensations like those of man himself at that time. What the Greeks strove for and implored spurred them on to recognize the divine in their surroundings, for example the Furies. If we were to go back even further, we would find that man comprehends his surroundings with the etheric body.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":204,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/68a/1909-02-26/p023","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"1909-02-26","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 68a/1909-02-26/p022","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/68a/1909-02-26/p022"}],"bead_confidence":"high","pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false,"length_check":{"de_words":189,"en_words":204,"ratio":1.08,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German. That was the great moment in human evolution when Moses, that great sage and initiate, felt this emerging in the course of events in the course of time, when he was in a state of inspiration in which he felt the divine blowing through the world in a completely new form and how this divine wanted to break through into human consciousness. In the past, man had not yet grasped the innermost center of his being. Now he had it. This beyond was translated into laws and commandments. These are the Ten Commandments. Through them, the whole of Yahweh's power had to take effect from grandfather to son and grandson and so on. The right idea had to live in the soul of man.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":78,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/68a/1909-02-26/p030","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"1909-02-26","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 68a/1909-02-26/p029","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/68a/1909-02-26/p029"}],"bead_confidence":"high","pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false,"length_check":{"de_words":68,"en_words":78,"ratio":1.15,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
