The surging and swaying of the impressions absorbed during the day from the physical environment manifests itself in the evening as fatigue. During the night, the astral body works off the fatigue. We feel the consequences of this work on the physical and etheric bodies early in the morning. If, time and again, physical research wants to object to the teachings of spiritual science about spiritual and psychological processes, the following example of a similar assessment can be pointed out. Let us assume: A person gives another a slap in the face. A has observed that the first person had a fit of anger and was therefore tempted to give the other a slap in the face. But B says: “I saw his hand rise and move towards the other person's face, and that's why he slapped him.” The part about the fit of anger is nonsense! This is the verdict of physical research when it insists on the truth of external facts in the face of the results of spiritual research. We only recognize a small part of the world when we only judge and observe external facts. Everything that happens in the world, that physics researches, that external observation shows us, these are only the gestures of the soul life of the world. The situation is quite different for a person in death than in sleep. Then not only the ego dissolves with the astral body, but the etheric body also goes with it and only the physical body remains behind. During life, the etheric body is a constant fighter against the decay of the physical body. But the physical body disintegrates the moment the etheric body leaves it. Wenn man immer wieder von der physischen Forschung aus etwas einwenden will gegen die Lehren der Geisteswissenschaft über die geistigen und seelischen Vorgänge, so kann man auf folgendes Beispiel einer ähnlichen Beurteilung hinweisen. Wir nehmen an: Ein Mensch gibt einem andern eine Ohrfeige. A hat beobachtet, dass der eine eine Zornaufwallung hatte und daher sich verleiten ließ, dem andern eine Ohrfeige zu geben. B aber sagt: Ich habe doch gesehen, wie seine Hand sich erhob, wie sie sich gegen des andern Gesicht bewegte, und daher entstand die Ohrfeige. Das mit der Zornesaufwallung ist Unsinn! — So beurteilt die physische Forschung, wenn sie den Ergebnissen der Geistesforschung gegenüber auf die Wahrheit der äußeren Tatsachen pocht. Wir erkennen die Welt nur zum geringen Teil, wenn wir nur die äußeren Tatsachen beurteilen und beobachten. Alles, was in der Welt geschieht, was die Physik erforscht, was die äußere Beobachtung uns zeigt, das sind nur die Gebärden des Seelenlebens der Welt. Ganz anders verhält es sich mit dem Menschen im Tode als im Schlaf. Dann löst sich nicht bloß das Ich mit dem Astralleib heraus, sondern es geht auch der Ätherleib mit und es bleibt nur der physische Leib zurück. Der Ätherleib ist während des Lebens ein fortdauernder Kämpfer gegen den Verfall des physischen Leibes. In dem Augenblicke aber zerfällt der physische Leib, wenn der Ätherleib ihn verlässt. Unmittelbar nach dem Tode sind das Ich, der Astral- und Ätherleib zusammen — eine kurze Weile.
