Du Bois-Reymond expressed himself in a lecture to the effect that I am briefly hinting at here, that the genuine, true natural scientist traces everything he perceives in the world back to moving matter. He said something at the time that is important for spiritual science today. He repeated Leibniz, who said: Imagine that the human brain is so large that you could put yourself inside it. If the soul has the perception that I see red, I smell the scent of roses, I hear the sound of an organ, then one could examine how certain parts of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen move. The movement in the brain could also be seen, but the sensation of “I see red” cannot be understood. Du Bois-Reymond says: A bridge will never be built, it is never possible to see how the atoms move. He concluded his observation as follows: Let us now consider a sleeping person. For him, the experience of “I see red” has sunk into an unconscious darkness. The natural scientist can explain what is lying in the bed, but when “I see red” arises in the morning, we cannot build a bridge to this sensation. “Ignorabimus” — we will never recognize. The natural scientist can never build a bridge to the spiritual.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"35. Der Naturforscher kann niemals eine Brücke schlagen zum Geistigen.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":200,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/68b/1908-02-17/p019"}],"english":["GA 68b/1908-02-17/p019"],"method":"identity","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":200,"en_words":225,"ratio":1.12,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"verified","verified":true,"evidence":["length","meaning","anchors","audit"]},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":1.07,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":2590,"original_word_count":2414,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"The Circular Flow of Man's Life within the World Of Sense, Soul And Spirit","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA068b/English/SOL2024/19080217p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
