The world would not be what it is if it were not active in the human soul. And if one calls the highest which is attainable by man the divine, then one must say that the divine does not exist as something external to be repeated as an *image* in the human spirit, but that the divine is *awakened* in man. For this Angelus Silesius has found the right words: “I know that *without* me God cannot live for a moment; if I come to naught He must needs give up the ghost.” “God cannot make a single worm without me; if I do not preserve it with Him, it must fall apart forthwith.” Such an assertion can only be made by one who premises that something appears in man without which an external being cannot exist. If everything which belongs to the “worm” also existed without man, it would be impossible to say that the worm must “fall apart” if man does not preserve it.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Introduction","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":188,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/7/intro/p018","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":null,"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["RSP1960"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"en","edition":"RSP1960","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/7/intro/p018","paragraph_aligned":true},{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"locus":"GA 7/einfuhrung/p018","anchor_mapped":true,"anchor_method":"vocab","anchor_confidence":"high","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/7/einfuhrung/p018"}],"german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"einfuhrung","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 7/einfuhrung/p018","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/7/einfuhrung/p018"}],"bead_confidence":"high","length_check":{"de_words":176,"en_words":188,"ratio":1.07,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
