My dear fellow students, why we do it is actually already contained in what I have just said. It lies in the fact that, by doing mathematics, we are merely active within our own mental experience, that we remain entirely within ourselves. I believe that those who have devoted themselves specifically to mathematical studies will agree with me when I say: in terms of inner experience, the mathematical, the process of mathematization, is something that, for those who do it out of inner ability and I would say, can do it out of inner enthusiasm, can give much more satisfaction than any other kind of knowledge of the external world, simply because, step by step, one is directly connected with the scientific result. And when you are then able to connect what is coming from outside with what you know in its entirety, whose entire structure you have created yourself, then you feel something in what is scientifically derived from the interweaving of external data and mathematical work that can be seen as based on a secure foundation. Ich glaube, daß diejenigen, welche sich im speziellen den mathematischen Studien ergeben haben, mir recht geben werden, wenn ich sage: In bezug auf das innere Erlebnis ist das Mathematische, das Mathematisieren etwas, was für den, der es aus innerer Fähigkeit und Anlage, aus innerem Enthusiasmus möchte ich sagen, betreibt, viel mehr Befriedigung geben kann als alles übrige Erkennen der Außenwelt, einfach aus dem Grunde, weil man Schritt für Schritt unmittelbar verbunden ist mit dem, was man als wissenschaftliches Ergebnis hat.
