What thought no longer illuminated for him had to develop feeling and emotion, as in an inner burning of the soul that became fatal for him, and we see this feeling and emotion burning away thought in his writings from the 1870s, “Morning Twilight” and “The Gay Science,” which arose from his soul as if from an inner inflammation of the soul.
