In this pre-Christian mysticism we find the soil in which Christianity throve as a germ of quite independent nature. This point of view makes it possible to understand Christianity in its own independent being, even though its evolution is traced from pre-Christian mysticism. If this point of view be overlooked it is easy to misunderstand that independent character, and to think that Christianity was merely a further development of what already existed in pre-Christian mysticism. Many people of the present day have fallen into this error, comparing the content of Christianity with pre-Christian conceptions, and then thinking that Christian ideas were only a continuation of the former. The following pages are intended to show that Christianity presupposes the earlier mysticism, just as a seed must have its soil. It is intended to emphasize the peculiar character of the essence of Christianity through a knowledge of its evolution, not to extinguish it.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Preface to the Second Edition","date":null,"location":null,"word_count":180,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/8/preface/p005","alignment_confidence":"low","alignment_reason":"no_original_to_compare","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":null,"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["AP1947","RPC1961"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"en","edition":"AP1947","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/8/preface/p005","paragraph_aligned":true},{"lang":"en","edition":"RPC1961","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":false,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/8/preface/p005?edition=RPC1961"},{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"locus":"GA 8/preface2/p005","anchor_mapped":true,"anchor_method":"vocab","anchor_confidence":"high","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/8/preface2/p005"}],"german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"preface2","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 8/preface2/p004","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/8/preface2/p004"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","length_check":{"de_words":167,"en_words":180,"ratio":1.08,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative and this passage's lecture alignment is imperfect.
