Imagine a five-year-old child is given a volume of Goethean poetry. What will he do with the volume of Goethean poetry? He would perhaps tear it up or play with it in some way, but in any case he would not do what the volume of Goethean poetry is actually there for, which one can do when one is in a different state than the one in which the child will be when he is ten or fifteen years older. He will do something different with the volume of Goethean poetry than he would at five years of age. What is the reason for this? The reason for this is none other than that the child's soul has developed in the meantime, developed from within. The child is now capable, because it has developed those qualities that it did not have at five years of age, of discovering something that was already there in the volume of poetry when the child was five years old. He was just the same externally in the eyes of the child as he might be when the child is twenty years old. Da wird es etwas anderes tun mit dem Band Goethe’scher Lyrik als mit fünf Jahren. Was ist der Grund davon? Der Grund dafür ist kein anderer als der, dass das Kind inzwischen seelisch entwickelt worden ist, aus seinem Inneren heraus seelisch entwickelt. Das Kind ist nun fähig, weil es diejenigen Eigenschaften entwickelt hat, die es mit fünf Jahren eben noch nicht hatte, nunmehr etwas zu entdecken, was in dem Bande Lyrik auch vorher schon war, als das Kind fünf Jahre alt war. Er war ganz derselbe vor den Augen des Kindes äußerlich, wie vielleicht, wenn das Kind zwanzig Jahre alt ist.
