This was followed by the transition to Ego-consciousness. And now think of the beginning of the *Rhinegold*. Is not the coming of this Ego-consciousness expressed in the opening notes themselves, in the long E flat on the organ? Do we not feel here that individual consciousness is emerging from the ocean of consciousness universal? In motif after motif we find Richard Wagner expressing in the tones of music a world that stands *behind* the physical world, using the instruments verily as if they were the primal organs of Nature.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Richard Wagner and Mysticism","site_heading":null,"date":"1907-12-02","location":null,"word_count":143,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/92/1907-12-02/p032","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:length","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"not_established","translator":null,"identified_edition":"Singles","book_title":"Richard Wagner and Mysticism","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA092/English/Singles/19071202p01.html","evidence":null,"reason":"source_says_translator_unknown","note":"The source page itself says the translator is unknown.
