What has been added to what human beings had already? What has humanity gained through incarnation? They have gained the ability to say ‘I’ to themselves. The whole level of consciousness, however clairvoyant, was merely a more or less enhanced dream level of consciousness. Human beings had no self awareness at that time, so this is what humanity has gained. It is the gift which God gave them. Religious records such as the Bible tell us that human beings were given self-awareness at the time when they incarnated. They did not know it until then, and this self-awareness will be progressively enhanced in present-day humanity. It is the principle which from the time when we were no longer in a dim or clairvoyant state of consciousness came to be revealed as the ‘I am’, and we can call it by no other name but ‘I am the I am’. This, then, is the word of Jahve: ‘I am he who was, who is, and who shall be.’[^1]","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":183,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/96/1907-02-28/p017","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"1907-02-28","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 96/1907-02-28/p018","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/96/1907-02-28/p018"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","length_check":{"de_words":182,"en_words":183,"ratio":1.01,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German. It was not yet in the human being. Human beings had a conscious awareness that had been poured into them and which they did not gain by looking at outside objects. Where did the ‘I am’ awareness reside? Divine spirits had such awareness. Human beings gained it after incarnation in a physical body. There you have the difference between the Holy Spirit, as it is termed among Christians, and the spirit as such. The Holy Spirit is the one which had self awareness up above, before incarnation; the spirit as such had self awareness in the human being. If you were to throw all self awarenesses into one pot, separating them from egoism, you would once again have the Holy Spirit.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":137,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/96/1907-02-28/p018","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"1907-02-28","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 96/1907-02-28/p019","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/96/1907-02-28/p019"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","length_check":{"de_words":126,"en_words":137,"ratio":1.09,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
