Wiseman arrived in NYC 1915 at age 30 as head of British Section Bureau V (intelligence) under MI1c (the War Office under Milner) — operationally MI6's New York chief. Reported to Mansfield Smith-Cumming ("C") of London SIS. Direct coded cable from his NYC apartment to Whitehall — separate from the British Embassy — and a direct line to Milner. From 1917 lived in the same building as House at 115 East 53rd Street (House on the 8th floor, Wiseman on the 1st); conferred for hours daily; served as House's "practically a private secretary." Wilson "opened his mind to him as to no other foreigner."
