Third Act, partly prose
BENEDICTUS: You must hear them. Because words are deeds here, they are also brought about by deeds that have already happened. And the deed that compels you to hear John here: it has happened. He is my disciple; and I was able to lead him to that level where his knowledge could understand the highest spiritual duty in such a way that he will surely fulfill it. And this fulfillment, John will snatch from you in the course of time. Look, compelled by the feeling I now arouse in you, into future times: you will not see John at your side. And because Mary will snatch him from you, you must now, according to the immutable law of your kingdom, allow what Mary wants to do for John to happen before your eyes.
